Rhythms of Life

Dance & Yoga Workshop
with Denise McClellan

“I believe dance and yoga are sister art forms,
and they also can be mirror images of cultural philosophies
celebrating, even healing, the human spirit.”

A good physical workout and fun should definitely go together, and the experience should make you want to be present, like playing games when you were a child. It’s feeling good from the inside out. This is the way the currently running program, Rhythms of Life- a Dance & Yoga Workshop, works for participants according to Denise McClellan. Designed to open your body and lift your spirit, this intensive speaks to everybody. The energy is just wonderful and the drummers are even better! You can’t help feeling the spirit come to life and grow as the group comes together and begins.

“Almost every woman friend or associate I know enjoys dancing but doesn’t do it enough, or would like to feel better about movement and her body, or was a dancer when she was younger, or is a dancer now. (This is true of some men too, but here I’m addressing females in particular.) Many women would continue to dance to some degree if classes weren’t so hard or loaded with hip hop steps geared toward city professionals. A lot of these women of all ages, some now enjoying yoga classes, have expressed an interest in doing more dance as it relates to the joy and ease of moving, life’s pulse, good health, and safe exercise. With this in mind, I have brought together what I know of the performing art of dance with what I know of the healing art of yoga to create a movement experience formed to exercise the body, mind and spirit simultaneously. Learning more about oneself through the juxtaposition of two art forms which rely on movement, stillness and breathe is a wonderful way to open and free the body, while connecting with other like-minded positive spirits.”

The life force, or chi, or prana, of the human body is the source of a dynamic and organic energy flow of non-static balance. When this balance is aligned the body opens up and you feel great because “you find You again.” This workshop, lasting generally around 2 hours, is a simple yoga practice combined with easy flowing, earthy dance steps of mixed ethnic and modern styles. Move, be still, focus and breath- all in an easy flow. When the prana is free, self-awareness opens up and makes way for self-expression. As authenticity grows, the spirit then lifts. And you feel alive! The workshop teaches, both physically and philosophically, the differences and similarities of dance and yoga, while at the same time providing enjoyable exercise to live accompaniment. It’s for those who want to move wisely and organically. Different individual workshops can focus on a unique theme like “breathing and letting go” or “opening the heart,” but all workshops share the spirit of lifted energy and feeling good about oneself. In addition, a portion of the workshop fee helps support NEW MOVES free community outreach classes.

You can register on-line by filling out the reservation form to reserve your spot in one or more of the workshops.
